                                  2. Dr. Sha Md. Shahan Shahriar (Google Scholar Link, Research Gate Link)

Introduction

The Environmental Pollution Studies Laboratory (EPSL) was founded in 2006 and belonged to the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, University of Rajshahi. EPSL covers research and education subjects referring to the environmental chemistry, monitoring and protection of the atmospheric, aquatic and terrestrial environment. It employs all necessary research infrastructures, equipped with modern, sophisticated analytical instrumentation and sampling equipment. EPSL has developed significant activities and collaboration with institutions and research centers at national and international levels. EPSL participates in graduate and post-graduate studies in the Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, University of Rajshahi.

Working Field and Future Scopes

The main goal of the Environment and Pollution Studies Laboratory (EPSL) is to study pollution in Bangladesh and its neighboring nations in general. Specifically, EPSL aims to study air, water and soil pollution. The EPSL surveys various aspects of pollution (e.g., sources, content, impacts). The laboratory, therefore, involves the assessment of different sites all over the country. In addition, the EPSL stands by the views of One Health and identifies the interconnectivity of humans, animals, and the environment.

Research Topics

The research activities carried out in this laboratory include the following subjects:

  • Atmospheric pollution from gaseous and particulate pollutants
  • Pollution of the aquatic and terrestrial environment from organic micropollutants, heavy metals-toxic elements, nutrients
  • Environmental fate of pollutants and transportation in environmental compartments
  • Development of analytical methods for the determination of various groups of pollutants in environmental samples
  • Heavy metals and pesticides in agricultural food products
  • Waste management-Risk assessment
  • Treatment processes for removal of pollutants
  • Health risk and pollution assessment

Environmental Services

Research activities in this laboratory can be applied to the following environmental analytical services:

  • Quality of drinking water (physicochemical parameters, heavy metals, organic micropollutants, disinfection by-products etc.).
  • Monitoring of surface water evaluation of quality status (physicochemical parameters, nutrients, heavy metals, organic micropollutants etc.).
  • Heavy metal and pesticides in agricultural food products.
  • Inorganic and organic pollutants in wastewater.
  • Risk assessment of solid wastes-Leaching tests.
  • Monitoring of ambient air (ΝΟx, O3, BTEX, VOCs, UFPs/PM, heavy metals, PAHs, PCBs, OCPs, PBDEs, EDCs, odor active VOCs etc.).
  • Health risk and pollution assessment.
  • Different pollution indexes determination and health risks assessment.
